Faith Formation Overview

Faith Formation is a comprehensive consecutive process from first grade through eight grade. There is a two year policy for the celebration of Sacraments however we do try and meet each child\family where they are at to reach a path that is best for the child and family.

Weekly Monday Faith Formation Programs

Weekly Monday Faith Formation  for students in 1st through 8th grades  on Mondays from  4:45 - 6:00pm. We do our best, based on volunteerism, to hold our catechist\student ratio to 11 to 1 in first through 4th grade. Fifth through eight grade tends to allow for a larger ratio. Class sizes are also determined by the number of aides that are available and the catechist comfort.

Monthly Family Program

Our Sunday Family Process offers an intergenerational catechesis for students in 1st - 8th grade and their families.  Families celebrate together at 12:00 noon Mass, gather for lunch and then break off for grade appropriate faith lessons while parents stay for adult catechesis. Every gathering ends with family prayer prior to dismissal at 3:00pm. Gatherings take place once a month from noon - 3:00pm and the remainder of the month families work at home on assigned lessons and submit online chapter reviews for each child. At least one parent must stay for the adult formation while their child is in the classroom. We do our best, based on volunteerism, to hold our catechist\student ratio to 11 to 1 in first through 4th grade. Fifth through eight grade tends to allow for a larger ratio. Class sizes are also determined by the number of aides that are available and the catechist comfort.

Sunday School Program

Our Sunday school program is an opportunity that has been offered to the three to five year olds in our community for the last 30 years. From October through April during the 10:00am Mass the children gather in the school for age appropriate Bible and faith lessons. While the children are in the school, the parents are celebrating the 10:00am Mass. Our Sunday School Process is staffed by two Directors and high school aged and adult catechists that are supported by junior high students from our parish.

Sacrament prep for First Communion and First Reconciliation

First Reconciliation:    November 21, 2017 6:30pm

First Reconciliation is celebrated with all second graders and those in our RCIA process for children before they celebrate First Holy Communion. The catechists will assist the families in the preparation process for their children.  Reconciliation is a sacrament of God’s love and healing graces and once a child has celebrated the sacrament for the first time, they are encouraged to maintain that sacramental connection as often as possible.

If your child is past second grade and they have not celebrated the sacrament, they will be encouraged to do so along with the second graders. Their formation and preparation will be through the direction of the Faith Formation Office and RCIA for children. Please contact the office to begin making arrangements for your child.

First Holy Communion:  April 14, 2018 11:00am Mass

The Our lady Queen of Martyrs Community traditionally celebrates First Holy Communion with second graders in the spring. Formation is geared towards family participation in activities and prayers.

For children in grades three or above, that have not yet made their First Holy Communion, we will discuss with the family to determine when the sacrament will be celebrated. It is usually the preference of the pastor that the children celebrate First Eucharist at the Easter Vigil or along with the  second graders in the spring.

Do you have an older student who still needs to celebrate Eucharist or Reconciliation for the first time?  We have opportunities for you too!  Please call or email the faith formation office for details.

Sacrament prep for Confirmation

Confirmation:   April 21, 2018  5:00pm Mass

Confirmation preparation spans over the span of the entire eight years with a more concentrated preparation beginning in seventh grade. The Celebration of Confirmation is a beginning and continuation of our faith  journey, not an ending. The formation is designed to help the candidates deepen their faith and their commitment to follow Christ. They take a close look at linking their life with the lives of the saints. They experience the justice and peace connectedness with their faith as they deepen their involved in service.

There is a  parent meeting to help identify the importance of your role in this step of your child’s faith journey. There is also a retreat day for all candidates and their sponsors. In the Sacrament of Confirmation, it is important that the candidates understand and desire to become a full and active member of the Catholic Church.  In order to do that, the candidate needs to celebrate in all the sacraments, which have brought them to this point.
